Why We Choose to Farm Organically

Updated: Nov 8, 2021

As told by John Vosper, the great grandson of Cleave Vosper, who with his brother Fred established the Vosper Farm in Matamata in 1911.

"After observing the farm for two or three years and noticing the soil structure was missing and that there were few earthworms, Liz and I began to consider the benefits of organics."

We began moving to organic practices in 1991, becoming fully certified as organic in 2005.

At its heart organic farming is about two important things – using natural processes to produce healthy food and animals as well as leaving the land better than we found it.

Why we choose to farm organically

Organic farming has better outcomes for the environment and biodiversity. It's about healthy soils, without the use of genetic modification, chemical fertilisers, pesticides or insecticides. It's about producing food in a sustainable way for the benefit of our people, our animals, our environment and future generations.

In a practical sense organic farming means we don't take shortcuts. We don't use artificial fertiliser. Our girls don't receive any antibiotics. We don't spray the farm. There's no production line fast tracking our Jersey girls and our milk is NOT modified – we bottle what our girls give us with no additives – just honest goodness from our land.

As a direct result of this care, our farming practice uses fewer greenhouse gases as there are less inputs and it results in less contaminants. Grass on our farm has deep root systems, meaning it's more nutritious and can withstand seasonal and weather variation.

Our Matamata farm, Cleavedale is certified organic through the BioGro scheme. BioGro is a New Zealand-based certification agency. The BioGro logo guarantees that a product is made without animal testing, genetic modification and the is no use of synthetic pesticides. It is the mark of a genuine organic product. BioGro certification is internationally recognised and accredited.

All our care means our Jersey cows are happier and healthier and this enables us to provide New Zealand families with a high quality A2 milk. Because our milk is not standardised it is more nutritious when compared to Anchor Blue top:

  • 42% higher in energy

  • 30% higher in protein

  • 21% higher in calcium

We're proud to give all this extra nutrition to milk lovers in every delicious sip of our rich, creamy milk with cream on the top of the bottle – just like the old days.
